It actually seems kind of trivial to say the Confederate flag is the HOT MESS OF THE WEEK. It’s probably more accurately one the biggest hot messes of the last hundred years in American history. However, a truly disturbing racially motivated massacre at a historic black church in Charleston, South Carolina has thrust the Confederate flag and all its hot mess back into the spotlight. The terrorist who killed nine people at Emmanuel A.M.E. Church last week had reportedly posed for pictures with the Confederate flag. The flag still flies along side the American flag at the South Carolina State Capitol. This is absolutely insane in 2015. The Confederate flag is a sign of hate. A sign of division. It’s completely crazy to think it belongs in any taxpayer-funded public space. The Confederate flag is being used as a tool for people to display their hate publicly. Of course everyone already knows this. Anyone who supports keeping the Confederate flag around thinks they’re just being slick. They don’t want it around for historical reasons. If it’s just about history, put it in a museum. Read about it in history books. But, no, they’re using as a tool to further their racist agenda. What happened in Charleston proves these messages are still being received by “evil doers”, as George W. Bush would call ‘em. It’s time to stop the foolery. The flag has to go. The news cycle we’ve seen play out for the past six months tells us we surely aren’t living in post-racial America. It’s time to finally clear out all elements of the Jim Crow era that keep getting in our way!
