Have you heard about the Kermit Gosnell trial in Philadelphia? Maybe you haven’t. That’s part of the hot mess in this controversial story. The narrative itself about an accused late-term abortion doctor, committing horrific crimes against babies that reportedly could have lived, is very hard to take in. Never mind the reported conditions of his clinic. Frankly, reading some of the details almost brought us to tears here at the HotMessFolder™. If the things Kermit Gosnell is accused of doing, are proved to be true, it’s far more than a hot mess. It’s literally some sick, warped, deranged stuff you only read about in twisted movie or book plots. The real reason this is the hot mess of the week is because of the debate raging about the lack of reporting on the story. Conservatives say media outlets have been ignoring the story. Reportedly, some conservatives feel it’s gone under-reported by a flock of journalists who are pro-life & don’t want to bring bad press to the issue of abortion. Do they have a point? Many of Gosnells’ alleged victims were Black, yet African-American media has been silent on it too. Why? Is it because the story is so gruesome? We also have to ask, if the victims were mostly White – would it have been covered more? To anyone who has spent a week in a newsroom, this sure would seem like a no-brainer for a lead at the top of any newscast. The picture of an empty press section in the courtroom for the trial is disturbing. Where are all the national news trucks? Why aren’t reporters doing live hits with updates on the trial? Why isn’t it being carried live like the Casey Anthony trial? This is a good time for people in newsrooms to start having real conversations about why some things get excessive coverage & other things barely make a blip. This is one hot mess that’s sure not going to be easy to clean up!
