Everything that’s happened in Baltimore in the last week is A LOT to process. There are so many hot messes to count. But they’re are a few things that just raise to surface when it comes to being more messier than the others. The fact that six Baltimore police officers are being charged in connection to Freddie Gray’s homicide is just way too sad, concerning, and unacceptable to trivialize by calling it a hot mess. However, the circus that’s surrounding the story is indeed a hot mess. This is why Baltimore, the use of the term “thugs”, and the Donald Trumps of the world are HotMessFolder‘s HOT MESSES OF THE WEEK, for the week that was. Baltimore, Baltimore, Baltimore where do we even begin? Things got so bad the city got put on curfew, video of a mom whooping her teenage son for rioting went viral, and Baltimore’s own Mayor used the term “thugs” to describe constituents. As per usual these days, Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, was forced to apologize on Twitter. See her apology tweets below. We get why she used it, but when she did she opened up pandora’s box for people to basically start using the word “thugs” to replace the use of the N-Word. People are using “thugs” because it’s safer. Once the Mayor used it, she cleared the way. Anybody using isn’t fooling anyone. They can’t go on television and drop the N-word to describe the protestors, so instead they’re using “thug”. But we all know it means the same thing. Let’s keep it real.
Speaking of Twitter, there was somebody else using it to spew a whole lot of nonsense regarding Baltimore. Who? Donald Trump of course. Trump tweeted this ridiculous tweet, which can straight up only be described as RACIST.
The truth is what’s happening in Baltimore has brought a lot of hidden racism to the forefront. The Twitter and Facebook trolls are working overtime. People just can’t seem to understand how folks who have been oppressed and marginalized may not feel the same sense of ownership towards their communities, as people who are accommodated feel. The Donald Trumps of the world don’t seem to understand that people who are kept on the periphery of society don’t feel compelled to uphold the status quo.
Nobody is condoning violence. The protests in Baltimore surely got out of hand. It’s the inability to understand why it’s happening that’s disturbing, though. If young people don’t even feel like they’re lives are valued, why would they value property? We all need the mess to stop ASAP, so we can start focusing on the real issues.
