This isn’t a white versus black issue. It’s a right versus wrong issue. It shouldn’t surprise anyone who is paying attention. HotMessFolder‘s ‘Hot Mess of the Week’ for the week that was is: the Eric Garner grand jury. Heck, when former President George W. Bush, says the Staten Island grand jury’s decision is “hard to understand”, we should all know it’s a hot mess issue that defies racial lines. It’s a hot mess, because the grand jury didn’t even think Garner’s case should go to trial. Despite the video evidence. Despite the violation of NYPD’s choke hold policy. Despite Garner’s death being ruled a homicide. It’s a hot mess that a petty crime can like selling lose cigarettes can get you killed by police in America. It’s a hot mess that a bunch of police officers, and paramedics, will stand around and watch you die on the ground, without attempting CPR. It’s a hot mess you can’t even have the facts of your homicide aired out in a transparent trial process. It’s all just a hot mess.
When need reform. The issue has highlighted how flawed our grand jury process is. Prosecutors can engineer outcomes. Any process that is done in the dark simply can’t be trusted. It’s time to bring the grand jury process to light. We’re at a tipping point. Many are feeling hopeless. Here at HMF, we feel a sense of urgency. A sense of urgency to push for change in our criminal justice system. It’s been an issue too many have willfully ignored for far too long. Now it’s smack-dab right in our faces. It’s on the news every time we turn on the T.V. The time to do something about it is now. Protests aren’t enough. There needs to be tangible change. Hot mess situations like this aren’t changed overnight. It will take decades of hard work. It’s time to get organized. It’s time to get strategic. Anything less would be a hot mess!
